Robert Eggers is today one of the leading figures of modern cinema. The director is fascinated by gothic, classic horror, mysticism and poetics of fairy tales in the spirit of the Brothers Grimm. He introduced himself to the film world with a sensational debut — “The Witch. New England folk tale”, where you can already discern the features of his unique style. He established his position with other titles such as “Nosferatu”, “Viking” or “Lighthouse”, and at the end of the year “Werwulf”, his original version of the story about the werewolf, will enter the cinema.
As for “Lighthouse,” it's a phenomenal study of isolation and the resulting paranoia. The film is based largely on the outstanding creations of two actors — Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. They play as beacons cut off from the world. Condemned to themselves, they are increasingly plunged into madness and psychosis. Black and white photographs (a nod to German expressionism), cramped, claustrophobic frames and an incredible atmosphere of increasing horror complete this unusual work.
