About the event

From the life of ARD correspondent on Brexit Island. Annette Dittert presents her book “Dear Britain. In search of Britain's soul”.

When Annette Dittert stood in front of Downing Street at midnight on January 31, 2020 to report live on ARD daily news that Brexit had now finally been completed that night, tears suddenly shot into her eyes just before the switch. London had long since become their home. Now the break with the EU was irreversible. It was an oppressive day for them and many Britons, who had hoped for another outcome until the end.

Ten years later, Annette Dittert asks herself what has happened to the country. She takes us on a journey across the island: we visit the Royal Albert Hall and the House of Lords, swim in the ocean on the east coast of the island with the women's group “Blue Tits”, chat with Scots, priests and earls. And they are staying with the author on her narrowboat “Emilia”, a small colorful steel boat on Regent's Canal, right in central London. The result is a multi-faceted picture of the idiosyncratic, charming Britons whose precarious economic and social situation — not only as a result of leaving the EU — is noticeable in everyday life and yet always maintain their posture.

“Dear Britain” was published on May 12 by DuMont Buchverlag, 256 pages
