Selma Lagerlöf is considered one of the Nordic region's greatest writers and in 1909 was the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. After a time as a primary school teacher, she got her big break with the debut novel Gösta Berling's saga, which ushered in a new era in Swedish literature.
With major works such as Jerusalem and the world-renowned work of Nils Holgersen, she managed to unite the local Swedish homeland with a rich, almost magical narrative art and profound human insight.
Her life, however, was more than pen and paper; she was a dedicated campaigner for women's suffrage, helped intellectuals fleeing Nazism's Germany, and chose during the Winter War to forfeit her Nobel Gold Medal in support of Finland.
Tore Leifer is our guide as we dive into Selma Lagerlöf's life and writing. Don't miss the opportunity to learn more about one of Swedish literature's great and visionary writers.
