Around 1900, not only was modern art booming in Berlin, but also theatre. The rise to become the leading theatre city in Europe was primarily due to the adventurous director and artistic director Max Reinhardt. For his visually powerful directing theatre, he worked with modern painters and sculptors. In 1903/04, Lovis Corinth was involved in several successful productions. The exhibition features original designs by the artist. Photographs of productions and actors convey something of the atmosphere of the performances. Peter W. Marx is a Reinhardt specialist and heads the Theatre Studies Collection at the University of Cologne, which provides important loans for the exhibition.
