Over more than a thousand years, composers have set the Latin death mass, requiem, to music. But Verdi's version, first performed in 1874, is unparalleled with its moving reflection on faith, doubt, grief and redemption.

The deaths of two close colleagues—one was the composer Rossini—led Verdi to consider writing his own requiem. It was to become a deeply personal work -- an exploration of man struggling to find his place and his faith, not unlike the operas for which the composer is famous.

Verdi's work is one of the most dramatic and intense death fairs in existence. Initially, many thought it was too overwhelming in its expression, but history has shown otherwise. Today, Verdi's Requiem stands as a work of indescribable beauty and emotional depth, which is beloved in concert halls the world over.

Extras on Fridays
After the concert you can linger in the foyer for a half-hour 'Extranummer', where you can get closer to the musicians of the DR Symphony Orchestra and experience them playing together in more intimate settings. For the 'Extranummer', the bar is open, the lights are dimmed and the musicians themselves have composed the programme and talk about the music. The 'Extranummer' takes place in the lobby of DR Koncerthuset and is included in the concert ticket.
