Although today one of Giacomo Puccini's greatest opera hits, which — alongside works such as TOSCA or CYGANERIA — certainly includes MADAMA BUTTERFLY, its premiere in La Scala ended in disaster. The love duet from Act I was buzzed, and as Cio-cio-san began singing about robin nests wriggling, the audience was so carried away by laughter that the show was almost interrupted. Today it is perhaps the greatest melodrama among operas, a real tearjerker. The fate of a geisha in love - deceived and abandoned, who cannot live without honor, so she dies with honor, the composer provided dramatic music with moving arias of the main character. Although in this story not only Japanese umbrellas seem to be paper, but also the characters themselves, the first bars of the aria “Un bel di vedremo” are enough for the listeners to forgive everything to Puccini, he intuitively knew that the atmosphere of the Far East would work perfectly on the stage, and he would delight the audience with its exoticism and uniqueness.
