Madison McFerrin

Madison McFerrin builds music from her own voice. She loops phrases, superimposes harmonies and gives them a pulse, moving freely between soul, jazz and house. The singer and songwriter will perform at Blue Note in Poznań. Although her name evokes associations with her father, Bobby McFerrin, the artist developed her own recognizable sound, which she presented, among others, in the Tiny Desk Concert series.

Her second album “Scorpio” grew out of the experience of parting and broken engagements. In thirteen tracks, McFerrin looks at the ending relationship and herself — sometimes with tenderness, sometimes with irony. He writes about loss, love and change, and painful memories are accompanied by soul melodies and dance rhythm.

The voice is both the narrator and the primary instrument on this record. Thanks to the vocal looper, the individual motifs grow into multi-voice arrangements, creating the background for subsequent phrases. McFerrin sensitively operates on their density, leaving room for the nuances of interpretation and the story itself.

This diligence was appreciated by “Variety”, noting the artistry of arrangement and the ability to reconcile pain with beauty. “The New York Times” saw in “Scorpio” a dramatic but not ironic reckoning with a failed relationship.
