Macbeth is Verdi's tenth opera and the first to feature a libretto based on Shakespeare's drama — composed in 1847, it became famous for its dark atmosphere and outstanding vocal parts — including the extremely demanding role of Lady Macbeth. This work is groundbreaking in Verdi's work: here the composer abandoned the traditional, ornate arias in favor of drama and musical reflection of the dark emotions of the characters. Two of opera's most prominent artists return to the Met stage: Quinn Kelsey takes on the role of the Scottish king haunted by the ghosts of those he murdered to take the throne. As obsessed with lust for power and pernicious ambition, Lady Macbeth is partnered with the magnificent Lise Davidsen. Already this couple on stage foreshadows a spectacle that should not be missed.
