Karolina Chomiczewska will invite us to medieval Italy, talk about the frescoes depicting the life of St. Francis of Assisi, their symbolism, secrets and groundbreaking painting innovations.
To this day, historians of medieval art are divided as to the authorship of an unusual series of frescoes from the end of the 13th century, dedicated to the history of Saint Francis of Assisi. Some believe that they were made by Giotto himself, others that representatives of the Roman school of painting. Leaving this dispute to scientists, during the lecture we will look closely at the frescoes about the life of Saint Francis, in relation to other works of painting of that time. We will find out why this story marks the beginning of the great school of Italian painting. We will discover the extremely rich symbolism of the work, its most interesting details, secrets and painting “innovations” introduced by the author of the cycle and all this, makes up this fascinating painting “film” about one of the greatest saints of the Catholic Church, whose 800th anniversary of death we celebrate this year.
Meet the host:
