The story of the former sanatorium in Kościelisko is a forgotten story of the native “magic mountain”, the first Polish medical facility for people with lung diseases founded at the beginning of the twentieth century by the marriage of doctors Bronisława and Kazimierz Dłuski. While the rooms of the sanatorium were decorated quite modestly, the common spaces, such as a library with a reading room or a music room, became the place of activity of outstanding artists of the turn of the century. About the event
The arrangement and furnishing of these interiors were entrusted to artists affiliated with the Polish Society of Applied Art, who preached the idea of integrating art in the spirit of Art Nouveau and folk stylistics. The press at the time reported: “The entire ground floor of the building is occupied by newly decorated salons created by artists such as Jan Rembowski, Karol Frycz and Henryk Uziembła. They are also true works of art in the smallest detail.” The building of the sanatorium exists to this day, but the turbulent history of the place has left little of its original appearance preserved. Colorful walls, colorful furniture upholstery, stained glass windows, tiled fireplaces, clocks, lamps - all the elements of equipment that were designed consistently, unfortunately, survived only in archival photographs and press descriptions. So we follow the imagination to evoke the atmosphere of the former sanatorium in Kościelisko, where artists not only carried out their projects, but were often also patients, such as the aforementioned Jan Rembowski (1879-1923), a young Polish artist belonging to the Group of Five and the Society “Podhale Art”, whose painting was most influenced by the reception of Stanisław's works Wyspiański and the influence of folk art of Podhale.
