About the event

We invite you to an author's meeting with Marcin Dymiter around the book: Electromagnetism of the City and Other Essays, published by the Bęc Zmiana Foundation. The conversation will be moderated by Krzysztof Regliński.

About the book:

The collection “Electromagnetism of the City and Other Essays” is dedicated to the city with its multi-level, sonorous life. After the Industrial Revolution, the development of railways and public transport, and the introduction of electrification, the sounds of technology and equipment from the 19th and 20th centuries, and the sound of “modern labor” and 21st century technology, became part of the urban soundscape, which is still subject to modification. The process of layering of successive transformations of the urban audiosphere continues. In this collection, the focus is on the experience of listening to the surroundings, but not this obvious city with an easily recognizable landscape, it is rather delving into areas that are not very audible. Electricity and technology have become, in a sense, the skin of the 21st century city. On a daily basis, it is difficult to identify these phenomena audially, because the described sounds resemble a cloud that overhangs over the city, creating a ringing everyday life. The texts include both historical processes and contemporary transformations of the sound landscape, signs of sonification, digitization of changes in the area in digital communication. These are processes that constantly expand the archive of urban sounds, and at the same time become a reason for observing the city.

What sound status does the modern city have? Is there still room for sounds characteristic only of a given place, or is it possible that, under the influence of leveling, soundscapes become desolate, leaving only repetitive and global signals? The collection of texts poses questions, dialogues with space and contemporary themes, invites you to wander through urban meanders in order to single out from a thousand sounds the most important ones, related to the place and its transformations.
