Doors: 19:00
Oakland-based artist Maria BC (they/them) has slowly opened up about their work process over the years, moving from a one-room recording process on the 2021 EP 'Devil's Rain' — where they were careful not to disturb their roommates or neighbors — to the non-soundtracked apartment walks on 'Hyaline' (2022, Father/Daughter) and on to the home of a family friend where there was a upvoted baby Steinway piano and where they recorded the album 'Spike Field'.
'Hyaline' was one of the highlights of ambient-folk in 2022. Here, the singer-songwriter created haunting tracks that felt as if they were broadcast straight from the heart of a mysterious, cobweb-covered attic. 'Spike Field' pushed their airy formula in a more refined direction, capturing the sound of a young artist who has quickly refined a very special voice. Strings, plucky guitar and buzzing waves accompany their classically trained mezzo-soprano, which drenches the arrangements in a denser and more kaleidoscopic fashion than any of their previous work. Maria BC describes it as “filling in the sonic space”, while 'Spike Field' builds on the intimacy of 'Hyaline' through liberating instrumental embellishments.
In 2026 we see Maria BC return with their third studio album, 'Marathon'. The album springs from a sense of urgency, masochistic determination and perseverance and reflects what it means to keep going, whether you resist or simply survive — you're in it for the long haul. On this record, Maria BC delves into themes of resistance, environmental decay, personal disruption and destruction, all intertwined with musical rawness and momentum.
