What happens when we add a Roland TR-808 drum machine to Elvin Jones and Art Blakey, divide the result by J Dilla, and then raise it to the power of Squarepusher? According to Time Out London, the answer is Mark Guiliana. The Grammy-nominated drummer and composer will perform at Blue Note in Poznań, promoting his latest album “BEAT MUSIC 2.0”. He will be accompanied by Nick Semrad on keyboards and Chris Morrissey on bass guitar.
Guiliana belongs to the group of musicians who move equally freely in acoustic jazz, electronic and rock. His rhythmic precision, distinctive sound and improvisational ingenuity have attracted the attention of artists such as David Bowie, Brad Mehldau, St. Vincent, Meshell Ndegeocello and M83. “The New York Times” called him “a drummer around whom a cult of worship has developed.”
“BEAT MUSIC 2.0” is the follow-up to the Grammy-nominated album “BEAT MUSIC! BEAT MUSIC! BEAT MUSIC!” from 2019. Eight compositions based on a strong percussion pulse and synthesizer sounds evoke the aesthetics of old electronic productions, developed by Guiliana through unobvious rhythmic divisions and contemporary performance solutions. The cinematic momentum of this music goes hand in hand with the expressive groove.
The new album is the next stage in the search for an artist who is increasingly presenting himself as a composer and multi-instrumentalist. On “MARK”, released in 2024, he recorded all the parts himself, reaching for drums, piano and synthesizers, among others. A year later, he developed this direction into “questions (volume one)”. Now he returns to the electronic world of Beat Music, and the concert in Blue Note will allow you to hear the latest material in the trio formula.
