Markus&Mark's Theatre Collective: The Pen Pals II

How to deal with those who have committed violent crimes? A central question that reveals the wounds of our society. How will future generations view our punishment today?

Recap. In 2021, The Pen Pals premiered at Sophiensælen. Markus&Markustheaterkolllektiv established pen pals — with four women imprisoned for life for murder. The correspondence was the only means for the joint development of the production and at the same time a central stylistic element. The most frequently asked question after the performances is “Do you still write letters to your pen pals now? “Yes.

A lot has changed since 2021: in the world, in the penal system — and in the lives of people who embarked on an unusual experiment back then. Pen Pals II reveals what happens in prison in five invisible years. What measure of time is five years if the horizon is lifelong? While 1,825 days have passed since then — their annual letter states how many days the pen pals have already served until release, then and now: 0. And how many days are left until release: death.

Anyone who already knows Amber, Lisa Jo, Maureen and April will recognize them — and everyone else will get to know them again. As in every new season, a new person is added: Olivia. She asks the question: Have you ever gotten into the car after a drink or two and then drove home? And did you get there safely then?

I didn't.
