About the event

Doors: 19:00

Mary Ocher returns to Copenhagen with the new piano album 'Weimar' — her most intimate release to date. The album draws on early-20th-century minimalism, chamber pop and contemporary classical influences, while being unmistakably Ocher: pensive and strongly rooted in emotional depth.

The title 'Weimar' points to our contemporary times and mirrors the fall of the Weimar Republic a hundred years ago, as well as the shadow of fascism that rose in the wake of its collapse.

Born in Moscow to Jewish-Ukrainian parents and raised in Tel Aviv, Mary Ocher learned as a child that questioning authority was a necessity for survival -- and that it comes at a high price. After refusing to serve conscription at the age of 20, she moved to Berlin, where she became a central figure on the underground scene. Here she became known for her uncompromising political positions and her sharp criticism of nationalism and war — clearly marked by her upbringing.

After extensive international tours and a discography that has been praised by The Guardian, The Quietus, TAZ, The Wire, Father, Paste and Libération, as well as recently a German Record Critics' Award, Ocher finds himself at a crucial juncture in his career. At a time when nationalism, censorship and cultural fragmentation are in rapid advance worldwide, her studies of identity, fear and belonging appear more relevant than ever.

Among her collaborators are Mogwai, King Khan, Die Tödliche Doris, Felix Kubin and Julia Kent, as well as her works include tributes to Delia Derbyshire as well as Dorothy Ashby and Omar Khayyam.
