Matinee

The year is 1962, and the Cuba crisis has brought the world dangerously close to nuclear war. But for a bunch of young people in the eternally sunny Key West, something else is also at stake: the premiere of MANT! , the latest radioactive B-monster movie from flamboyant filmmaker and businessman Lawrence Woolsey (eminently played by John Goodman). 'Matinee' is director Joe Dante's ('Gremlins') homage to the cheap sci-fi and horror films of the 1950s and '60s -- and to a time when a trip to the movies could feel like an event in itself. As nuclear panic looms large in the world, Woolsey turns up shock and cinema magic, turning the screening of his film into a spectacle that audiences will not forget for the time being.

Friz Freleng's colorful cartoons exude all the life -- and chaos -- that can ensue in and around a movie theater: the fox who ushers the audience to their seats, the somewhat corpulent hippopotamus who clambers past the entire row to find his seat, the donkey selling popcorn, and the duckling who sneaks into the operators room and starts fussing with the projector.
