Matthew Lopez's Legacy, Parts 1 & 2

What do we owe to those who lived and loved before us? And what responsibility do we bear for those who come after us? This is how the American playwright Matthew López asks in his award-winning play The Legacy, which, in the 2023 staging at the Royal Theatre, won a Reumert for Performance of the Year.

We find ourselves in New York in 2016, where Toby is frantically walking and waiting for his newly written play to be premiered. His girlfriend Eric is wasting the wait at the house of underling Walter, who is in his mid-fifties and can tell frighteningly about the United States of the 80s, where the AIDS epidemic shook the world and left deep marks in the gay community. When Donald Trump wins the presidential election that fall, the United States begins to change. The rights of homosexuals can no longer be taken for granted, and Eric and his friends are forced to ask themselves who they are and who they would like to be. The questions are many, but perhaps most of the answers should be found in an old house some distance outside the city...

Matthew López has written a riveting performance inspired by E.M. Forster's 1910 novel Howards End and which has been compared to Tony Kushner's seminal neo-classic Angels in America.

Arven is an all-day performance of approximately 8 hours incl. lunch break.

Long table dinner during the performance Arven — Saturday and Sunday

Make your theatre evening special with an atmospheric dinner in Aamanns Replik during the long break in Arven i Skuespilhuset.

Dinner is enjoyed at beautiful long tables, where you sit with those you have ordered a menu for — and at the same time share a table with other guests from the performance.

It creates a vibrant and cozy atmosphere where the theater experience continues around the table.

The timing of the break may vary slightly, but we are in close dialogue with the Royal Danish Theatre on the day and adjust the serving accordingly so that you have a quiet and well-arranged dinner.

On these special evenings, unfortunately, we cannot accommodate allergies or other dietary considerations.

The booking is binding and cannot be cancelled after payment has been made. This also applies in case of cancellation of the performance — we hope that you will still come and enjoy dinner.

On these evenings we have prepared both the menu and the staff especially for you and we look forward to welcoming you.

Coffee and tea are served in take-away cups, so you can take it into the hall and enjoy it during the performance if you wish.
