“Meczycho” is a comedy written by Juliusz Machulski especially for the Powszechny Theatre in Łódź — Polish Comedy Centre. The premiere will take place in June as an epilogue to this year's edition of the Festival. The director of the play is Tomasz Karolak.
In the latest comedy “Meczycho” Juliusz Machulski explores the theme of family, around which his other theatrical comedies also revolve. This time it is a portrait of three generations. “This is my next modern comedy of manners, in which three generations participate. And each generation, for obvious reasons, has a different approach to life,” says Machulski himself. The pretext for the clash of different visions and worldviews becomes the meeting of the grandparents and parents of 18-year-old Nela, who, during a family meeting, introduces Aleks - her partner to the closest ones. The background of the plot is a football match. And “football is the most important of all unimportant things,” as Machulski notes, citing words attributed to Albert Camus.
The intergenerational encounter in the comedy “Match” takes on a number of plots, including those related to xenophobia and homophobia, negative emotions conditioned by prejudices, stereotypes and historical traumas. Are three generations and three different worlds able to hear and understand each other? Can we live in symbiosis? Machulski with intelligence, brilliance and sense of humor proves that he is. “I don't remember Polish theatrical art that tries to fill historical traumas and xenophobic prejudices with comedy,” says the author. His art is a lesson in respect for diversity and an attempt to understand attitudes that are foreign to us and that often arise from difficult experiences in the past.
