MEDEA

It's a play about lust and ambition. A love that turns to despair. About betrayal and misunderstanding. About madness born of humiliation. About intolerance, which is gaining momentum. About our here and now.

The performance is realized by Adam Nalepa, director, graduate of Theatrology, Filmography and Ancient History. Associated with the Tri-City artistic community, artistic director of the BOTO Theatre Foundation in Sopot. He has many years of cooperation with the Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdańsk, where he realized, among others, the premiere of “Tlaszany Bębenek” on the occasion of the celebration of the 80th birthday of Günter Grass.

As a director and creator of the adaptation, he often returns to the classics, re-reading it, breaking the schemes. He insists that he likes to take risks in the theater. This time he reached for the work of his favorite Euripides, who revolutionized the representation of women in the theater, thus giving them a voice.

The figure of Medea in the reading of Adam Nalepa is today one of millions of people forced to leave their homeland - for economic, political reasons, in the face of war or climate catastrophe. In the new world, she is stigmatized as a threat to the “old order”, traditions and values. She is “different”. She's uncomfortable. She's unwanted.

The story is simple and at the same time painfully topical. Jason brings Medea as a trophy from his expedition. However, when he realizes that her presence could jeopardize his position and ambitions, he rejects her. The community is just waiting to say, “go back to where you came from.” Humiliation, betrayal and exclusion become the root of anger — the anger of a woman who has been deprived of her home, dignity and future.

Premiere — 28 March 2026, the big stage of the Adam Mickiewicz Theatre in Częstochowa

Fig. Piotr Dłubak
