Mela Muter was a Polish painter of Jewish origin, living at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. She created in the spirit of modernism, is included in the so-called Paris School (École de Paris), belonged to the French National Society of Fine Arts (Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts). She painted portraits, landscapes, scenes of everyday life, prominent people of her time — for example, Maurice Ravel, Stefan Żeromski, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Romain Rolland.
Her paintings are considered not only magnificent works of art, but also extraordinary portraits of the entire era. They are characterized by a dense texture, lively matter of paint, special attentiveness to man. In turn, her private life was full of passionate relationships and dramatic events.
The book about Mela Muter was written by Sylwia Zientek: author of publications devoted to Polish artists (“Polki na Montparnassie”, “Only them. Polish art without men”, “The splendor of Montparnasse”) and numerous historical novels (including the series “Hotel Varsovie”, “Kolonia Marusia”). Art expert and propagator. A lawyer by training, she completed a two-year postgraduate study in the history of modern art at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Her texts devoted to art and artists' biographies appear, among others, in “Piśma. Opinion magazine”, magazine “Restart”, “Wysokich Hebcasach”, “Gazeta”, “Wysokie Heels Extra”, “Skarpie Warszawska”. Originator and co-writer of the television costume series “Matilda”.
