Everyone knew her paintings. Hardly anyone knows her story. Mela Muter painted the outstanding people of her time — Żeromski, Sienkiewicz, Ravel and Rolland — that is why her paintings are today recognized not only as magnificent works of art, but also extraordinary portraits of the entire era. In turn, her private life was full of passionate relationships and dramatic events. After a tumultuous affair with Staff, she was comforted by Reymont, and with Gottlieb she shared not only the studio. Marriage became a prison for her, she lost her only son and experienced the nightmare of both world wars. Despite these difficulties, she never stopped creating, and Paris became her new home.
