Melodies of Polish Polesia

We invite you to workshops focused on melodies from the multicultural Polish Polesia — a land where Polish, Belarusian, Ukrainian and Jewish traditions mix.

The workshops will be held in three groups: rhythmic, instrumental and singing. At the end of the meeting, all groups will come together to play music together. We will remember what the old parties, dances and solemn weddings in Polesie looked like — and actually how they sounded.

Drumming Workshops/Conducted by Mateusz Dobrowolski

The classes will be devoted to mastering the basics of playing the drums and reflecting on several dances and performance styles present at Polesia. As part of the class, participants will learn exercises to improve the executive apparatus and master such elements as: alternative techniques of holding the drum and baton, derivation of basic and combined beats, tremolo from the finger and double reflection.

Drums for participants will be available on site.

Workshops for people of all skill levels.

Instrumental Workshops/Conducted by Paula Kinaszewska

For an hour and a half, participants will learn Polish dance melodies — by listening method, first singing the melody and then repeating it on the instrument.

Workshops for people with the ability to play an instrument to the extent that they can follow the melody.

Please bring an instrument with you.

Singers workshops/conducted by Anna Jurkiewicz

The singing workshop will begin with a vocal warm-up with exercises supporting the freedom to work with the voice. Participants will learn several ritual, lyrical and singing melodies from the area of Parchevo. We will draw on sources from the archives, as well as from personal meetings with the singers.

Duration of the meeting: 2.5 hours (1.5 hours workshops + break + music 45 min)
