The META4 string quartet, founded in Helsinki in 2001, won the Moscow Shostakovich Quartet Competition and the Vienna Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition. Between a classical Haydn Quartet from 1781 and Ravel's only contribution to this genre from 1903, the four Finns placed the third quartet by Grażyna Bacewicz (1909—1969). It was written in 1947 in Paris and is regarded as an example of the neoclassical phase of the Polish composer.
