Traditional music of Lithuania is one of the most interesting phenomena of the musical culture of the Baltic region. It has retained many archaic features and at the same time remains an important element of modern cultural life. The lecture will focus on folk songs (dainos) that have accompanied the inhabitants of the Lithuanian countryside for centuries, as well as traditional musical instruments such as kanklės, skudučiai or birbynė. It will also discuss sutartiniai — unique multi-voice songs inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage, as well as contemporary forms of preservation and reinterpretation of this heritage, including the activities of folk ensembles and creators of music inspired by tradition. The meeting will be an opportunity to learn about the musical traditions of our northeastern neighbors and to reflect on the role of music in preserving cultural memory and building community identity.
