Algiers, 1938 year. Meursault (Benjamin Voisin), a clerk, shows no mourning at his mother's funeral. Soon she becomes embroiled in a conflict, the dramatic finale of which will take place on a sun-scorched beach. François Ozon screens Albert Camus's 1942 novel, preserving its uncomfortable question: does judgment concern an act, or also a man who is unable to show the feelings expected of others?
The black and white photos of Manu Dacosse and Voisin's frugal play allow you to feel the distance of the protagonist, but also the heat and tension hidden under the apparent calm. Ozone also brings out from the novel the context of French Algeria and the silence around colonial history. The director said in Venice that working on the film prompted him to look at the history of his own family linked to Algeria. “Alien” is thus an encounter with a reading that still resists simple answers, and with a cinema capable of seeing it anew. The film was presented in the competition of the main festival in Venice.
Millennium Studio:
is a permanent offer for those who appreciate cinema with high artistic values. On average, every two weeks we present in one-off screenings films that have been awarded at film festivals, those that shock and stimulate thinking, and those that are difficult to find in the repertoire of commercial cinema. The selection of titles is handled by Łukasz Maciejewski.
