About the event

NFM will host the acclaimed Ensemble Polyharmonique in Europe! This Berlin-based vocal group has a number of excellent albums with former German and Franco-Flemish repertoire. The artists have been collaborating with each other for more than a decade, and together with the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra they will perform church cantatas by Georg Philipp Telemann. It is easy to forget that it was not only Johann Sebastian Bach who composed cantatas for Lutheran services. Georg Philipp Telemann undoubtedly wrote them more than the Leipzig Chantor. At least twenty annual cycles are known today, and about one thousand four hundred individual works have survived. The author worked in this genre during his employment at the court in Eisenach in Turin and while working as a city musician in the churches of Frankfurt and Hamburg, free cities of the Reich. From the beginning of his career, he took care of the stylistic diversity of his works. This led to giving the yearbooks a variety of nicknames.

The seven cantatas that the public will listen to belong to the so-called Sicilian yearbook, performed at the latest in the liturgical year 1719/1720 in Eisenach (and repeated later in the mentioned cities). The name of the cycle of compositions with a five-part form is associated with the recurring pastoral character and the singing melody. In part of the works discussed, among others in the title Beloved, Let's Love Each Other TWV 1:909, the rhythm of the dance — sicilianas appears. Almost all the cantatas presented were intended for the ordinary period of the year (after the Feast of Pentecost). Their lyrics come from Johann Friedrich Helbig and have not yet been recorded on recordings.
