Fashion Movie Club: It's a Wonderful Life

We invite you to the last meeting of this year as part of the Fashion Film Club, during which we will present the classic of Christmas cinema, or “It's a Wonderful Life” directed by Frank Capra. An absolutely unique screening, because this year the film celebrates the 80th anniversary of its release!

George Bailey (James Stewart) and his uncle (Thomas Mitchell) run a construction savings bank in a small town. He devotes himself almost entirely to work, helping those in need to get their own housing. Unfortunately, just before Christmas, the uncle loses eight thousand dollars, which can lead to the closure of the cash register. Bailey breaks down nervously and decides to commit suicide. At the last moment, he is saved by the Guardian Angel, who reveals to him the most beautiful aspects of life.

Is it possible to see the history of America through a dress, suit or hat? In “It's a Wonderful Life” -definitely yes.

This time we will take a look at the costumes of one of the most beloved Christmas movies, but we will go one step further. We will talk about the fashion of the 40s, post-war transformations and how cinema built the image of the “ideal” life: home, family, work, femininity and masculinity. Or is that why we still like this world so much: for elegant coats, hats, dresses, home interiors and the promise that somewhere between everyday life and big dreams lies our own “wonderful life”?
