In the obscure castle of Kachottenborg, a crazy professor brings one monster after another to life — only to quickly forget them again. The first of his creatures, Lappe-Lars, has therefore made it his responsibility to keep his crazy monster family safe — and hidden — within the castle's four walls, as he fears that just the slightest sign of monstrosity will cause the village's residents to burn the castle to the ground.

The plan sticks until a traveling circus comes to town. The cunning circus master is desperate for a new attraction, and in Lappe-Lars he immediately sees his next big star. Will Lappe-Lars accept the circus's offer of fame, leaving his helpless family alone in the face of the villagers' wrath?
