Murder at the Hotel

Murder at the Hotel by Ron Clark and Sam Bobrick is a brilliant black comedy, balancing on the border between farce, crime and grotesque. The action takes place in a hotel room — a space that becomes an arena of love intrigues, betrayals and increasingly absurd crime plots.

The starting point is the classic triangle: wife, husband and lover. However, this is only the beginning of an avalanche of events. Each of the heroes hatches his own plan to get rid of the “problem”, but subsequent attempts lead not so much to a crime as to a series of comic misunderstandings and unexpected twists. The intrigue is constantly getting complicated, and the roles of victim and torturer change as if in a kaleidoscope.

The show is not a classic crime story. Instead of the tension built around “who killed?” , the viewer receives a dynamic game of conventions and intelligent humor. The absurdity of the situation, brilliant dialogues and the pace of a comedy of mistakes make the story take on the character of a theatrical rollercoaster, in which the mechanism of human passions is more important than the crime. The characters function on the principle of a mask, their actions are simultaneously psychologically motivated and grotesquely redrawn. Each of them tries to take control of the situation, however, in the end, they all become victims of their own plans.

It is a theater based on rhythm, precision and acting “timing”. Comism results not only from the text, but also from the stage situations and the constant reversal of the viewer's expectations. In the spirit of the best traditions of farce and black comedy, the show exposes the illusion of control over life, showing that the most intricate plan can fall apart in an instant.
