“Morphing America” — an international conference on American studies at the University of Szczecin

From 16 to 18 September 2026, the International Scientific Conference “Morphing America” will be held at the University of Szczecin, organized by the Institute of Literature and New Media of the University of Szczecin in cooperation with the Polish Association for American Studies (PAAS). The conference will focus on the contemporary transformations of American culture, literature, film, media and society. Its main goal is to create an international forum for the exchange of research findings and discussion on a changing America, with a focus on social, political, technological and cultural processes. The conference will be attended by 66 researchers from Poland and abroad, representing different disciplines of humanities and social sciences. An additional 12 people will participate in the Workshop for Young Scientists preceding the conference. The workshop will take place on 15 September and will be devoted to consultation of research projects, methodological discussions and support for the development of young researchers. Special guests of the conference will be Prof. William Brown from the University of Alberta in Canada and Prof. Heike Paul from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany. Their plenary lectures, conducted in English, will be open to the public. The conference program includes seven scientific sessions, plenary lectures and cultural events. On 16 September, the Pionier 1907 Cinema will host a special screening of the film Kos (Scarborn, directed by Paweł Maślona, 2023), followed by a conversation with the film's producer Aneta Hickinbotham and representatives of the Kościuszko Foundation. The meeting will be hosted by Dr. Anna Gutowska. On September 18, there will be an author's meeting with Prof. Kacprem Bartczak and Prof. Mark Tardi from the University of Lodz: both guests are poets, essayists, translators and researchers of American literature. The meeting, combined with poetry reading and conversation about contemporary American and Polish literature, will be led by Prof. Paulina Ambroża from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. This event also remains open to the public. The conference will take place at the Centre of Natural Sciences of the University of Szczecin at Mickiewicza 16a Street. Participation in the conference itself is intended for registered participants. Plenary lectures and meetings with Poets are open and do not require registration. We invite all interested parties to the open events of the conference — participation is free and does not require prior registration. A detailed programme, along with information on event times and locations, will be available via a QR code placed on conference posters.
