“Sentimental comedy”, as the author himself used to say!
The play by Leonard Gersha, written in the 1970s, tells the story of a young Don, who dreams of his own independence and desires to break out from under the protective wings of an overprotective mother. In the background of this story, there is the prospect of independent living and a feeling for the shaken, liberated neighbor Jill, a woman with an equally complex past who disrupts the protagonist's hitherto orderly world.
Don, thanks to his companion, discovers areas of life hitherto hidden from him, while Jill discovers in his relationship the value of authentic freedom. Their unobvious, sometimes difficult love becomes the impetus for change - both in the way they perceive their own limitations and in confronting reality outside the safe house shade.
Brilliant dialogues and humorous and at the same time not devoid of surprising twists make the show reach viewers of all ages. The play, directed by Dariusz Poleszak-Hass, is maintained in the convention of romantic comedy, whose strength remains lightness and wit, carrying a multidimensional charge of emotions and an inspiring question about the meaning of life.
“Butterflies are free” reminds us that true freedom is born from self-acceptance and the courage to live on your own terms.
