Music of Many

In the historic hall of Hamburger Bahnhof, Cage and Stockhausen meet in a staged concert. In the expansive installation “We Make Years Out of Hours” by Lithuanian artist Lina Lapelytė, the Zafraan Ensemble, as a satellite of the Music of Changes music theatre, interweaves two works by the composers together with female singers from the opera ensemble: Cage's Hymns and Variations (1979) shows the path “from something to nothing and back again”, Stockhausen's instrumental piece (1965 Stop) creates an intense, physical experience of presence and energy from suddenly interrupting sound events — a dynamic happening. Starting from these pieces, the installation itself also becomes a score. Perception is moving into focus, the limits of listening are being shifted — the most important exercise for both composers to save humanity.
