Still Life: Early Baroque Fantasy explores the vivid and unpredictable sound world of the early seventeenth century.

About the event

Still Life: Early Baroque Fantasy explores the vivid and unpredictable sound world of the early seventeenth century. Centred on the stylus phantasticus, the programme unfolds as a sequence of contrasting musical scenes, moving between virtuosity and introspection. Works by Castello, Farina, Stradella, Kapsberger and others highlight a repertoire shaped by freedom, colour, and expressive immediacy, performed on period instruments with a rich continuo palette.

Programme:
Dario Castello Sonata Prima (Book II)
Carlo Farina La desperata
Gregorio Strozzi Toccata Quarta per l’elevazione
Alfonso Ferrabosco II The Sound out my Voyce
Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger Toccata Prima (Book IV)
Gaspar Sanz Jácaras
Alessandro Stradella Sinfonia a tre
Dario Castello Sonata Seconda (Book II)

Performers and biography:
Musica d’Outrora

Música d’Outrora is an early music ensemble founded in 2022 by conductor and harpsichordist Pablo Devigo. Bringing together musicians from across Europe, the group focuses on the vivid and unpredictable repertoire of the early seventeenth century, with particular emphasis on the stylus phantasticus.

Their debut album, Still Life: Early Baroque Fantasy (Deux-Elles, 2025), recorded with the support of the Continuo Foundation, has been praised for its bold continuo playing, timbral imagination, and expressive immediacy, establishing the ensemble as a distinctive voice in early Baroque performance. Since its foundation, Música d’Outrora has developed a growing presence in the UK, with performances at the National Centre for Early Music in York and St Cecilia’s Hall in Edinburgh, one of the oldest purpose-built concert halls in Europe, as well as a live appearance on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune. Their 2023 touring activity marked an important step in establishing the ensemble within the UK early music scene, with further engagements continuing to expand their reach. The ensemble will make its Barcelona debut in 2027.Through its performances, Música d’Outrora seeks to recover the volatility, intensity, and imaginative freedom of early Baroque music, presenting it as a living and immediate art form.
