“The Master and Margarita” is one of the most important literary works of the 20th century. A satirical image of Moscow in the 1930s, Jerusalem in the days of Pilate and Christ, the Full Moon Ball, performed by Satan for the world's greatest villains... and the fifth dimension that ultimately compromises the materialistic conception of the world. Bulgakov's novel is extremely inspiring for me, it is an excellent literary material for creating a spectacle full of magic and humor, giving an opportunity for staging momentum and contemplation of the fate of the world. Finally, “The Master and Margarita” talks about the things that are most important to me — love and artistic freedom.
Mikhail Bulgakov lived and created at the time of the largest experiment in the field of social engineering in history. The Bolsheviks, in order to create a “new order”, subordinated everything and everyone to themselves. Lenin already ordered the closure of all independent newspapers in 1918, and in 1922 he introduced censorship controlling every field of artistic creation, leading to the degradation of the status of artists and writers. He subordinated the courts to himself, and the law served only to validate his decisions. Stalin made Russia a Soviet place where life was unbearable...
In such a reality, Bulgakov wrote “The Master and Margarita”. In his literary imagination, he brings Satan to Moscow. Woland and his entourage in the terrible world of Stalinist terror need not do evil. It exists in a dimension unparalleled in human history. The meanness, greed, reporting, servility or cowardice of the inhabitants of Moscow of that time are omnipresent. The devil is no longer needed by men. God also... The master in the world of triumphant, total evil, in his novel evokes the unconditional and total good - the figure of Christ, which in the times of Stalinist terror is an act of extraordinary courage and artistic freedom. The Bolsheviks will not forgive him. Margaret, for whom love is the emanation of freedom, becomes a witch to save her beloved. “The fifth dimension” - the fantastic world that we will discover following Margaret, finally becomes a refuge for our heroes, their escape from the terrible, Stalinist reality.
Shortly before his death, Bulgakov whispered: “so that they know... so that they know.” As a director, I have the honor to follow the literary genius of Mikhail Bulgakov. The play “The Master and Margarita” was created precisely for the purpose: “so that they knew...”.
