The concert Passion music a quatro voci falls during Lent. For this reason, the repertoire includes Joseph Haydn's unique, deeply meditative work: The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross (Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze, Hob. XX:1). The piece was composed in 1786 by order of the Oratory of Cádiz. The music focuses on the eschatological aspect of suffering and redemption. The composer masterfully captures the emotions behind each of the seven sentences spoken by Christ on the Cross: (1) Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing; (2) Truly I say to you: Today you will be with me in paradise; (3) Woman, here is your son. Behold, your mother; (4) My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? ; (5) I desire; (6) It is done! ; (7) Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit. The parts are preceded by the Introduction and crowned with the part of Il Terremoto (Earthquake). There are three versions of this work: the original for orchestra, for string quartet and the oratory version for the first time.
