A phone call brings Thomas to a hospital, where he finds his wife Carla in tears. As the circumstances of her accident come into focus, so too does a relationship whose familiar terms suddenly seem uncertain.
From this deceptively simple premise, Angela Schanelec constructs a relationship drama that resists the conventions of the genre in favour of something decidedly more elliptical. As conversations circle what remains unspoken; gestures and silences come increasingly to the fore with a spellbinding intensity. My Wife Cries is at once formally audacious and acutely attentive to the emotional lives of its characters and how quickly intimacy can give way to estrangement.
The screening on Friday 20 November will be followed by an in-person Q&A with Angela Schanelec.
My Wife Cries, dir. Angela Schanelec, Germany / France 2026, German with English subtitles, 93 min.
