“Mikva” is a story about women, their everyday problems, but also the dilemmas associated with functioning in a religious community. The drama takes place in a mikvah — a ritual pool in which women perform monthly ablutions.
The mikvah is the place where the spiritual manifests itself through the carnal. All emotions, hurts, omissions, all pain and passion are sunk in the body. The body is subject to constant control, although it is only a tool to reveal our desires, our inadequacy, our inner freedom. Internal independence can be a threat to the community. And only through the body can it be controlled.
In the mysterious world of ritual bathing, the stories of eight women unfold against the backdrop of a religious ritual site and an evolving feminist consciousness. A comprehensive analysis of the traditions and rituals in this hit Israeli art, is an excuse to look at the position of women in every society. In the current situation of Polish women, art is extremely relevant.
The heroines of the drama are women of different ages and dispositions. Their affairs, secrets, fears against the backdrop of a radicalizing world, where there are still places where the #metoo movement has not reached. The appearance of a new employee of the mikvah triggers various reactions of the heroines of the art. Their behaviors, stories, and confessions expose their meticulously hidden secrets. It turns out that everyone has something to hide...
