What has the ideal man looked like throughout history? And why have men for periods worn delicate pink, worn floral scents, jewelry and sumptuous textiles -- things we today often associate with femininity?
On the occasion of International Men's Day, the Glyptotek invites a conversation about masculinity, ideals and identity over 2,000 years.
From the marble sculptures of antiquity to today's social media, images of men have helped define what a man should be. The strong army commander. The powerful leader. The heroic and invincible body. But what happens when you don't fit into the ideal? And what notions of manliness do we still carry with us today?
On Mändenes Kampdag, Glyptoteket invites you to a conversation with historian and publisher at the Glyptoteket Sander Funch, artist Aske Kreilgaard, historian Anders Larsen/Chantal al Arab, and diversity consultant Moussa Mchangama about the body, gender and power, based on the museum's new exhibition Power & Fashion in the Roman Empire.
In the conversation, we ask what male ideals we've inherited from the past, how they affect men today, and what new narratives about masculinity are taking shape.
Sander Funch is a historian, communicator and specialist in ancient culture. He is the host of Glyptoteket's podcast Man in Marble, where he delves into ancient people, ideas and cultural history, as well as the programme Where Did We Come From? on R8Dio.
Anders Larsen, Associate Professor at DIS in Copenhagen, where he teaches history and visual culture, and researches such as fashion, masculinity, the history of sexuality and body ideals. He also appears as the drag artist Chantal al Arab and is the co-author of The Gay Men's History of Denmark.
Aske Jonatan Kreilgaard is a Danish multi-artist, activist and lecturer and has founded, among other things, the NGO Refugee Youth Service. He is internationally known for the sculpture AGAPE — a breastfeeding man — which is currently on permanent display at KÖN in Aarhus.
Moderator: Moussa Mchangama, co-founder and senior advisor of the consultancy In futurum, which works with change processes in the arts and culture sectors, among others. In 2024, he published the book Texts om Hjem.
