Na Hong-jin: A Recipe for a Korean Blockbuster — “Welcome to Hope” by Hong-jin Na | KinoKorea

Na Hong-jin, the creator of the famous “Lament”, told the audience to wait as much as 10 years for his next production. The premiere screening of the film “Welcome to Hope” (2026) — appreciated at the Cannes Film Festival, is an opportunity to see on the big screen the original fusion of action cinema with science fiction. Set in the realities of a small port town, the story of a mysterious alien invasion is full of spectacular scenes of chases and clashes, as well as — somewhat less obvious — dark humor.

However, Hong Kyung-pyo's killer pace, technical virtuosity and visual splendor of his photographs do not make Na Hong-jin — a genre cinema, especially thriller, horror and sensational film, to a higher level — lose sight of the fixed motifs for which his work is known. Therefore, during the lecture, we will look not only at how the Korean director refreshes familiar genre formulas, but also the categories of evil, space and locality, which are important in individual films.
