Once a year, enthusiasts from all over the world flock to this picturesque village in the north of Scotland to compete for the title of world champion in... making porridge!

In the documentary “The Best Porridge in the World” behind the fierce culinary rivalry hides a warm and humorous story about eccentric locals, living tradition, local heritage and the community that one would like to be a part of after the screening.

Every autumn, the sleepy mountain village of Carrbridge comes to life as local and foreign competitors take up the kitchen glove and battle it out for the honorary Golden Stirrer award at the World Porridge Cooking Championships. Although the recipe seems banal - oatmeal, water and salt - there are many ways to prepare it. Each participant is a different method, philosophy and history. But “The Best Porridge in the World” is not exclusively a chronicle of culinary struggles.

For local legend, charismatic championship organizer Charlie Miller, this event means so much more. The man is nearing retirement and struggling with health problems, yet he feels a responsibility to the local porridge committee and wants to secure the future of the profession — and his own legacy. Ian Bishop is also fighting for a good name, as he makes one last attempt to win the title. But the competition does not sleep: the incomparable Lisa Williams, the “queen of porridge”, returns to recover the trophy. Meanwhile, a new generation of participants — Toby Wilson, an Australian chef known for the idea of the oatmeal tortilla, and Adam Kiani, armed with a secret technique inherited from his grandmother — are about to challenge the porridge status quo.

Showing the life of a small Scottish community against the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes, the film brings to mind the documentaries “Trufflers” or “Honeyland” - created with tenderness and understanding for their characters.
