The artists of Tarnów's Smallest Scene of the World invite you to the world of literary songs from the repertoire of Magda Umer. In the concert “And for now the butterflies fly” you will meet songs that do not want to grow old and still have something to tell us about the world and the time in which we have come to live.
Magda Umer (born 9.10.1949 — 12.12.2025) is a singer, one of the most important Polish performers of literary song and sung poetry, but also a screenwriter, director, journalist and actress (Rachel in Stanisław Wyspiański's “The Wedding” directed by Adam Hanuszkiewicz). Winner of the title Master of Polish Speech. As a vocalist, she made her debut in Warsaw student cabarets in the 1960s; the songs, for the performance of which she received the first competition awards, remained with the artist forever — “If you think that I don't love you” (muz. Wojciech Knittel, b. Andrzej Woyciechowski) — distinction at the Winter Song Exchange; “Autumn concert for two crickets and the wind in the chimney” (muz. Krzysztof Knittel, b. Wojciech Niżyński) — an award of the FAMA festival and the Festival of Polish Song in Opole. She sang in a unique, intimate way, also whispering and meloreciting the lyrics, always with great attention to the meaning of each word. The songs “Your hair” or “Sorry for the sun, sorry for the rain” were written for her by older school colleagues, as it turned out later — outstanding creators, author Andrzej Woyciechowski and composer Krzysztof Knittel. In later years, Magda Umer became friends with outstanding poets of the song — Agnieszka Osiecka, Jeremy Przybora, Magda Czapińska, whose lyrics she sang. She created unforgettable poetic performances, directed memorial concerts dedicated to, among others, Agnieszka Osiecka and Jeremy Przybora, theatrical performances (including Krystyna Janda's monodrama “White blouse” written by Osiecka, the play “Zima Żal” with new lyrics by Jeremi Usztyła, the play “Pod mocnym anioł” by prose by Jerzy Pilch). In the years 2006-2011 she ran a blog with Andrzej Poniedzielskie, initiated by a joint performance “Chlip-hop”. She recorded audiobooks with fairy tales for children. In the discography of Magda Umer, next to the albums “Everything is finished”, “Autumn Concert” and more recent ones — CD “Noce i snyy”, CD “Siempre się na algo czeka” or CD “Bezsenna noc”, we will find, among others, the CD “Kołysanki utulanki” — this disc recorded with Grzegorz Turnau in 2003 educates the next generation of the youngest listeners. Magda Umer was also an author, her lyrics were sung by, among others, Stanisław Soyka (“Tak jak w kinie”) or Maryla Rodowicz (“A tear on my eyelashes trembles”, “Jest cudnie”). She was honored, among others, for outstanding merits in the activity in the student movement and achievements in professional and social work with the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polish Revival, the Gold Medal “Merited to Culture Gloria Artis”.
The smallest stage of the world in the concert “And for now the butterflies are flying...”
Magda Umer had an amazing sense of good lyrics and subtle, beautiful music. Over the years, she meticulously built her repertoire, which delighted, touched, entertained. We chose songs that fit into a closed story of hope, fragility, happiness and feelings that help us live even in the saddest moments. Legendary songs and those lesser-known and perhaps even more beautiful songs have been arranged for one male voice, piano, double bass, vibraphone and percussion instruments.
This concert is also an opportunity to meet the poems of the most outstanding Polish song poets who wrote for Magda Umer — Agnieszka Osiecka, Jeremy Urzel, Magda Czapińska, Wojciech Młynarski, Jonasz Kofta, as well as with the music of great composers of this genre. We will hear, among others, “Still in the Green Games”, “Only Love”, “Autumn Concert for Two Crickets”, “Waltz Nights and Days” or “Already Time to Sleep”.
