Unlucky number or crazy porn

Winner of the Golden Bear at the last Berlinale, a film treatise on pornography, obscenity and perversion. “The Unfortunate Number...” tells the story of a leaked sex tape and the consequences that making marital bedroom games public will have for Emi, a teacher at a prestigious high school. Provocative, brilliant, seething with anger and irresistibly funny, Radu Jude takes the phenomenon of moral panic into the workshop, exposing the accompanying hypocrisy, ignorance and authoritarian tendencies. What is “really” obscene: the sight of people having consensual sex or the misery of a city devastated by savage capitalism and nationalist ideology? Is the teacher perverted, or is it the self-styled tribunal of outraged parents who gathered at the school to judge her? Filled with archives, “The Unfortunate Number...” is a catalogue of this real pornography: political, religious, class, spreading shamelessly under noble slogans. The real reasons for shame, Jude argues, are to be found in our streets and in our own history books.
