A spectacle that provokes, intrigues and draws the viewer into unknown areas of the human psyche. Based on the texts of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, a master of the word, metaphor, the absurd and the grotesque, it takes us on a disturbing journey through the meanders of consciousness, shaped by the influence of narcotic substances.
SINCE I COULD DO NOTHING FOR SOCIETY AND THE NATION WITH THE SO-CALLED “FREE CREATIVITY” (...), I DECIDED, AFTER A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS, TO CONFIDE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC MY VIEWS ON DRUGS, (...) WITH THE AIM, AT LEAST IN A SMALL WAY, OF HELPING THE GOOD POWERS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST THESE MOST TERRIBLE ENEMIES OF HUMANITY, APART FROM WAR, POVERTY AND DISEASE.
(“Drugs”, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz)
Witkacy — not only a brilliant observer of reality, but also an insightful commentator on the condition of man and civilization. The show “Unwashed Souls/Drugs” is not just an ordinary account of drug experiments. Witkacy, through his insight and literary artistry, paints a picture of a man lost in a world of illusion, where the boundaries between reality and hallucination become fluid. Anna Kękuś's monodrama is also a kind of meditation on the nature of consciousness, on the human tendency to escape from the pain of existence and on the terrifying power that drugs can unleash in a person. In it we will also find traces of irony and bitter humor that become a way to understand the tragedy and absurdity of human existence.
For years I have been impressed by the relevance of Witkacy's voice to the condition of man contemporary to him. Reading texts (among others essays from the collection “Narkotyki”, “Unwashed Souls”) sounds amazingly topical today. For me, as a creator, telling about the touching aspects of our functioning here and now through excellent works burning with irony, sarcasm, satanic, and finding context in the present, is an artistic challenge — says director Anna Kękuś.
In the role of Everyone we will see the actor of the young generation Sebastian Fabijanski, who through a monodrama will create a fusion of acting and music. His creation will be an intense study of the inner disintegration of the protagonist, who in search of happiness goes through a process of self-destruction to find catharsis and inner balance. The play shows the hero's journey from getting lost in the banality of everyday life to discovering the meaning of existence, which can be found not only in art, but also in the rituals of everyday life and seemingly the most trivial aspects of life. The stage form of the monodrama highlights Witkacy's lyrics in the context of the existential crisis of modern man.
