On October 16, 2026, we invite you to the 12th National Library Night. This year we will meet under the slogan “Biblioteka (se) dza”, and in the Public Library in Międzychód we will once again combine literature with cinema.
For several years now, our Night of Libraries has had a cinematic character. Instead of a traditional meeting, we propose an evening during which we first watch the screening of a literary work, and then talk about the film with an invited film expert. This year, the choice fell on one of the most anticipated Polish films of 2026.
“Doll” by Bolesław Prus on the big screen
During this year's Night of Libraries we will show “Doll” directed by Maciej Kavalski, the latest adaptation of the novel by Bolesław Prus.
The film had its theatrical release on September 30, 2026. It is a contemporary adaptation of one of the most important novels of Polish literature, telling about Stanisław Wokulski, his affection for Izabela Łęcka and the world of Warsaw aristocracy and bourgeoisie of the late 19th century.
In the lead roles we will see Marcin Dorociński as Stanisław Wokulski, Kamila Urzedowska as Izabela Łęcka and Marek Kondrat as Ignacy Rzecki. The film also features a large group of famous Polish actors.
It is a production with great momentum, extensive scenography and costumes, which tries to tell a well-known story in the language of modern cinema.
The film is just the beginning
Our evening will not end with the closing credits.
After the screening, participants will be invited to talk with Robert Domański, a film expert and popularizer of Polish cinema.
Robert Domański is associated with the Polish film community also outside the country. He is one of the co-organizers of the Festival of Polish Films in Australia, an event presenting Polish cinematography to audiences in Melbourne, Sydney and other Australian cities. As part of the festival, he also participated in the work of the jury and activities related to the promotion of Polish cinema.
During the meeting we will talk about “Doll” as a literary screen. We will consider what happens to the novel when it hits the big screen, what decisions the creators make and how modern cinema interprets the heroes created by Bolesław Prus.
There will also be room for questions and your own observations. Is Wokulski from the film the one we remembered from the book? How is Isabella Lęcka shown? What has been preserved from the literary prototype, and what has been retold again?
It is these questions that make the film part of our Library Night not just a screening. It will also be an opportunity to talk about literature, cinema and how the way well-known stories are told is changing.
