inspired by the novel by Maria Dąbrowska
“Nights and Days” directed by Michał Siegoczyński is a play about the first love and the last. Epic momentum and historical costumes intertwine with pop culture's contemporary version of the fates of Barbara and Bogumil.
Marriage with reason or love without reciprocity? Romance or death? The heroes compete for happiness and fulfillment, but they also fight for two different visions of Poland. This story unfolds between love and war immersing us in the fate of ordinary people in extraordinary times.
Maria Dąbrowska was nominated five times for the Nobel Prize for “Nights and Days”. The piece is considered the best Polish realistic novel of the 20th century, and the film based on it was watched by two thirds of Poles (21 million viewers) — only in the first two years on the screen! This iconic title in the Horzycy Theatre is reflected in the contemporary mirror while remaining in dialogue with the original and the screenings.
The Main Prize of the Festival of Masterpieces, the “Wanda” Award
The award for the courageous and consistent placement of the Night and Days of Maria Dąbrowska in the context of pop-cultural associations without misappropriating the values of the original was given to Michał Siegoczyński
Julia Szczepańska received the award for a multi-coloured, complex interpretation of one of the most demanding characters in Polish literature, Barbara Niechcicowa.
The award for a series of episodes, including for the silent figure of Rachela, Maria Dąbrowska's great love, she received,
A distinction for the brave episode of Barbara's mother — Jadwiga Owarńska, received.
Julia Szczepańska won the Andrzej Nardelli Prize awarded by the Theatre Critics Section of the Association of Polish Stage Artists for the best debut for the role of Barbara Niechcic.
However, despite the fact that the show is conceived as funny, with a large dose of intelligent sense of humor, we quickly realize that it is black humor. Incredible amounts of irony, pastiche and unpardonable ridicule pour out of the stage. [...] A total spectacle, beautiful — absolutely enchanting in every way.
On the KCK stage, Michał Siegoczyński presented his rollercoaster-like interpretation of the best novel of the interwar period. “Nights and Days, or Between Life and Death” from the Wilam Horzyca Theatre in Toruń refer to the book, or, as you prefer, to the scenes of Jerzy Antczak's unforgettable 1975 film, in order to completely deconstruct them, turn them upside down, so it is not surprising that among the characters on the stage she appears herself Maria Dabrowska
Paulina Drozdowska, Stefan Żeromski Theatre in Kielce
A great acting game of the younger generation and skillfully combining many intricate plots into one extremely interesting whole.
Amazing impressions. With humor — where you need it, with reflection — where you need it, with nostalgia — in the right place. A lot of positive impressions. As soon as the opportunity arises, I will be there again, maybe even two. Congratulations to the entire cast.
Excellent juxtaposition of the themes of the novel and the film with modernity. Another classic turns out to be universal and timeless. The way of juxtaposing the two worlds turned out to be brilliant. Sensational musical setting. And, of course, masterful acting.
The most interesting thing is the interweaving of the realities of a given moment in the theater, with the action of the play. For me it is an excellent idea and very well executed. Who has not seen this show, I recommend it, worth watching.
