Bram Stoker's “Dracula” plot, slightly modified due to copyright issues, served as the canvas for the film.

However, the film survived because several copies have survived, according to various versions coming from illegal sources or from other countries where the film was shown.
The year 1838 Thomas Hutter is an employee of an intermediary agency for the sale of the estate in Wisborg. He is sent by his employer to Transylvania to Count Orlok to finalize transactions for the sale of the estate.
The last night before arriving at the castle of Count Orlok, he spends in an inn, where he finds the book “The Book of Vampires”. The next day, Hutter rents a car with which he intends to reach the castle. However, halfway through, people, out of fear, refuse to travel further.
He goes on alone. After crossing the bridge, he is taken to the castle by the count's charioteer. Orlok greets him very friendly and invites the guest to dinner, although he himself does not eat. When the clock rings at midnight, a frightened Hutter cripples himself with a knife in his finger. Count Orlok wants to suck up the bleeding wound, but turns away at the sight of a cross hanging from Hutter's neck.
The next day, Hutter wakes up with a wound on his neck, the origin of which he attributes to mosquitoes. At night, Count Orlok signs the documents for the purchase of an estate near Hutter's house. In bed, Hutter finds “The Book of Vampires” and reads it. He begins to suspect that Orlok is a vampire. Then the Count himself appears at the door, whose true nature has prevailed.
In the morning, Hutter searches the castle. To his horror, he finds the tomb in which the count rests. At night, he witnesses Orlok stacking several coffins on a cart and entering the last one. The car drives away and Hutter tries to get out of the castle through the window. He falls on stones and loses consciousness. When he regains consciousness in the hospital, he decides to return to his city as soon as possible. He knows the Count is on his way there.
Meanwhile, an uncrewed ship arrived in Wisborg. It turns out that there are only a few coffins on board and a lot of rats. At night, Orlok takes the coffin and leaves the ship unnoticed. Rats bring plague to the city, which causes panic. Hutter also arrives in the city in very poor condition. His wife Ellen reads “The Book of Vampires” and learns how to kill Orlok, the culprit of all her misfortunes.
