pl. Wojciecha Kilara 1, Katowice

The world of classical music lives in recent seasons with the discoveries of forgotten women's music. We are reacquainted with works that are good, very good and outstanding. Dora Pejačević did not manage to fully develop her enormous talent, as she died at the age of 38. She is considered the first Croatian composer to create orchestral music. She came from an aristocratic family, so she had to break the class rules that applied to her. The erudite with broad horizons created music characteristic of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, enriching the late Romantic musical language with impressionist harmonies and rich orchestral timbres. Before the tragic birth, she left a moving letter to her husband, in which she recalled her path to creative freedom, urging him to raise their common child, developing his abilities regardless of gender.

About the event

The woman who went so far as to murder to break out of an unwanted marriage is the protagonist of Antonín Dvořák's poem The Wild Dove. After a month, she finds a new husband, however, the cooing of a pigeon flying to the grave of the first spouse reminds her of the crime committed. It is a tragically ended story of remorse, told in the rich and colorful symphonic language of the Czech master.

Beethoven's Piano Concerto II fits fully into the aesthetics of musical classicism. Framed in our concert in a late romantic framework, it will reveal the fusion of early 20th century music with old tradition and balance a dose of rationalism rich in extreme emotions in the musical world of the fin-de-siècle.
