The cello and clarinet played a special role in Brahms's work. In his youth, the composer played the cello and devoted two outstanding sonatas to this very instrument. In the Sonata in E minor, a fascination with Bach polyphony is reflected, which is sealed by a quote from Die Kunst der Fuge used as the theme of the finale.

About the event

The cello and clarinet played a special role in Brahms's work. In his youth, the composer played the cello and devoted two outstanding sonatas to this very instrument. In the Sonata in E minor, a fascination with Bach polyphony is reflected, which is sealed by a quote from Die Kunst der Fuge used as the theme of the finale.

However, Brahms had his own prejudices and creative hesitations: he did not write a solo concert for this instrument, which to this day cellists cannot forgive him. In turn, he discovered the charms of the clarinet only at a late age, when he heard the virtuoso play of Richard Mühlfeld. This fascination was so strong that Brahms returned to composing, to which he had already managed to say goodbye! The essence of the combination of clarinet and cello in Trio A minor was brilliantly expressed by the musicologist Eusebius Mandyczewski, a friend of the composer: “it is as if the instruments are in love with each other”.
