Clara Schumann was a role model for the virtuosos and composers of her era. Unyielding to her husband's fame (and even eclipsing him at times), she heroically combined family responsibilities and caring for the ailing Robert with an international career and creative work. Their work permeated each other — Clary's superb Trio in G minor Op. 17 was an unmistakable model for Robert's Trio in D minor Op. 63 written a year later. It is also referred to as the most outstanding work written by a woman in the 19th century - although here the criteria are relative.
Cécile Chaminade, although 38 years younger, was unable to study at the Paris Conservatory due to her father's decision. Despite this, she developed an international career over time, and her Piano Trio II in A minor is an outstanding example of late Romantic French chamber music, of a quality equal to the works of her male peers.
