Grażyna Bacewicz's quartet for four violins, a pedagogical piece, comes from 1949, a difficult year for Polish music, in which the socialist aesthetics prevailing in the Stalinist state were proclaimed. Meanwhile, the Quartetto is a superb study of violin harmony and ensemble precision — pure formalism! Formed two years later, the Fourth String Quartet is a triumph of the strategy of incorporating folk melodies into the neoclassical style. The work brought Bacewicz worldwide fame and strengthened her position as the leading Polish composer.
String Quintet II marks the culmination of Johannes Brahms's chamber work, who originally planned to say goodbye to this piece with composing. As in a lens, all the characteristic features of his chamber music are concentrated here, although the breadth of the extreme parts suggests that they were created as sketches for the unwritten Fifth Symphony.
